How do you go about deciding what type of company/brand to collaborate with
JB: We look for like-minded brands and brands we respect and support build relationships with them and then create stories and products
KS: We’ve found that the best things happen when we work outside of our comfort zone so we tend to collaborate with people in fields different from ours We like working with people who inspire us and whose products and objects have a sense of heart-forward thinking idiosyncrasy and good design And sometimes partnerships happen organically over a cup of coffee Sometimes it’s just kismet
What do you hope to accomplish by working together
JB: I always hope to build something that excites the different brand followers and introduce them to either Undefeated or to the brand we are collaborating with ? it’s no different with Ace
KS: We’ve had the notion to work with Undefeated in the back of our minds forever ? they’ve been the byword for athletic apparel and classic sportswear in LA since they opened shop Getting them into the gym at Ace Hotel DTLA seemed the perfect opportunity to manifest our mutual admiration into something real Inspired design clean lines and serious Rocky IV can-do
What’s the biggest misconception in your various industries today
KS: That we operate with any specific formula or recipe in our hotels All the things we do are based on instinct inspiration and very specific relationships with people and places
JB: That Undefeated is street wear specific and only has one type of customer
The word “natural extension” was used to describe the partnership What does that mean to both of you
KS: We can’t speak for James but Ace has always admired Undefeated’s no-frills aesthetic and unflappable work ethic so there was no question who we wanted to be partners for this gym and sportswear collection Undefeated has left a lasting imprint on the athletic and street wear world so we were excited to see what magic they’d bring to our DTLA spot
JB: I think because we have always kept our voice and our look as has Ace
How does Los Angeles fit into the overall theme
KS: The hotel inhabits a spot on the neon stretch of DTLA’s Historic Broadway theater district and we’ve taken a lot of cues from the area’s storied cultural and cinematic history In many ways the hotel and its theatre represent the revival of bygone eras The gym also has a look and feel that’s inspired by classic American gyms ? warm leather accents cast iron dumbbells sit-up benches speed and heavy bags chin-up bars and medicine balls There’s a strong tradition of fitness in LA still and we’re excited to be part of that inheritance
What’s the most under appreciated aspect of the services the Ace Hotel provides

Where do you see streetwear in 10 years
KS: On the streets we hope
